the Amazing Joy buzzards are to comics as The Venture Brothers are to animation. They both take an old genre/ idea and make it new and fresh by cramming it with pop culture references, and witty dialog .
Art:
The artwork reminded me so much of the Gorillaz, That I had to look up if it was done by Jamie Hewlett. Turns out no. It’s done by Dan Hipp, who’s exploits seem to be this comic and a Samurai comic. And although not having a large collection of comics under his belt, he handled this very well. The layout of the pages flowed and the contrast of light and dark places made the images pop. From the looks of his blog his style is getting slicker and more distinctive. I hope he dose more work.
Story:
This is one thick comic, and the intro is one of the best I’ve ever seen. But it’s just not enough to hook you through the first few chapters. It’s not until the pacing starts to pick up that the story gets good. So hang in throught the first few chapters.
