While Reading Tintin in The Blue Lotus, I came upon the little gem of wisdom shown above. As I was reading it, I though ” This is great. Tintin is dispelling racism, and bridging cultural gaps. What an open minded thing to do in that era” Until my eye’s landed on the last panel.last-pan These to gentlemen are Japanese. Which of course you could tell just by the background. Oh yeah, and the fact that they are a racist stereotype. Clearly aware of the time frame in which the comic was written, I can understand why Herge would make such a stylistic choice. It just seems funny have such a juxtaposition.
