For a long time now this list has been running through my brain. I mean… I’m a girl, so I actually pay attention to the geek girls that come along that make me proud be a nerd of such gender.

So here it is, the long awaited list of my Top 5 Most Awesome Geek Girls.

#5 Kate Libby

Occupation: Hacker

Show: Hackers

Type: Computer Nerd

Sure the movie burned… like acid (see what I did there?)… but this is a chick that spouts out nonsensical crap about the insides of a computer. She gets to be #5 because she began (imho) the age of cool indie computer girls… just don’t pay attention to what she says.

#4 Lisa Simpson

Occupation: N/A (she’s still in school)

Show: The Simpsons

Type: Grade A student/Musician

Although there’s the tinge of stereotype that hinges on the ‘Grade A Student’ profile, Lisa Simpson still deserves a place on this list. I had plenty of girl friends growing up that looked up to this character for her ability to be smart, be female, and still kick some major a** on the saxophone. And she had spiky indie hair before it was even cool!

#3 Gadget

Occupation: Mechanic

Show: Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers

Type: Mechanic/All-around geek

Gadget was one of my first introductions to the female geek variety and even though she’s a mouse she can still kick some awesome nerdy tail. From building machines to fixing computers she’s the all-around awesome geek girl that made me want to grow up and play with wires instead of barbies.

#2 Cyd Sherman aka Codex

Occupation: Guild Member of The Knights of Good

Show: The Guild

Type: Video Gamer

Count this girl as one AWESOME geek. As the show continues to circle around her daily diary of being a guild member while struggling with the outside world, it still keeps it fresh with new reasons to love being a geek. I think the most enjoyable part when watching this character is being able to get 99% of her jokes, and then being impressed that there’s 1% of geekness that goes deeper even than my own. Truly awesome.

#1 Kaylee Frye

Occupation: Mechanic

Show: Firefly

Type: Mechanic

She won the hearts of many a geek guy, but out of all the geek girls I could look up to she’s definitely at the top. Who can forget the episode where we see how Kaylee was hired on to be the Mechanic for Serenity?! Nitty gritty, straight talkin’, and smart. It’s her raw realism as a character – the sense that this could actually be a real person – that’s my favorite quality in Kaylee, and the reason that she’s #1 in the Top 5. Shiny!
